Bye Bye Babydoll

Can we talk about babydoll dresses for a minute?

I like a nice empire waist as much as the next bosomless broad but I'm on the cusp of being over these flouncy Dainty June dresses.

I'm damn near 30 years of age. Is there a cutoff point for for little-girl gear before I become a sad impression of an over-the-hill nymphet?

Despite my age range propriety issues, I actually love wearing this dress... The cut is well-fitted and versatile, the low neckline leaves room for a lot of styling possibilities, and the short length works for a lot of shoes. I may or may not occasionally sleep in it, even.

And this dress (and the versions of it I own in red and black) has nobly served me for the past decade or so. It's just that, for the first time in my life, I am beginning to wonder if I'm too old to wear something.

Help! How do you know when you've outgrown a trusty standby silhouette?

As someone who is, ahem, older than you, I can offer the following tidbits which may or may not rate as insight:

1. Change is inevitable, and it's our attitude towards it that makes it ok or painful. So, instead of morning the passage of an old wardrobe favourite, you could see it as the opportunity to bring in a new wardrobe favourite.

2. Having said that, I think you look great in those dresses. They seem very much "you," which suggests that they're successful because of your spritely and confident personality. So, as long as you love it, wear it. When you start loving it less and become so incredibly self-conscious that your confidence wavers, then you can revisit item number 1 above.

Besides, if this call here at http://pullyoursoxup.blogspot.com/ can wear what she wants, I think the rest of us are doing fine. :)

And in the interests of disclosure, I like wearing cropped pants...but I'm also besieged by the occasional doubt that I might not be able to pull it off for much longer. C'est la vie.

That's my two little pennies.

Your cents make so much sense. It's just so very weird reaching an age where I have to think about being appropriate.

I hate being appropriate. I refuse!
